Today marks Harry’s 31st birthday. I feel like he’s probably getting some major pressure from the Queen to settle down and give George and Charlotte some cousins. So this serves as your friendly reminder, Harry, that I’m available…and blonde! Which you seem to prefer… But enough of that, let’s recap the last 31 great years with our favorite ginger royal!
This is the first known picture of Harry, being presented by his father, Charles, Prince of Wales, and his mother, Diana (RIP), Princess of Wales. Prince Harry, like his older brother William, was raised by Diana to have as normal as a childhood as possible. They went to school, went on family vacations, and caused trouble.
But of course, being a Prince, even if you are the “spare heir”, comes with royal duties. And knee socks!!
Both Will and Harry were very close to their mom. There’s a million pictures out there where they are just loving up on her.
Which is why it was even more devastating when she met an untimely death in 1997. A couple of weeks ago marked the 18th anniversary. How is that possible? I think of how much she would want to be here watching her sons grow up, get married, have kids, etc. This is probably the most heart breaking photo of all time.
Credit due to Prince Charles, who always seemed to put a little distance between his sons, as he truly stepped up after their mother’s death to raise two well-adjusted boys.
Harry went to Eton College for England’s version of high school, following in the Spencer lineage’s footsteps, as opposed to the royal choice of Gordonstoun. He then took his gap year in Australia and really started to get into charity work, just like his mom. He worked in Lesotho, a small country near South Africa, where he worked with orphaned children and produced the documentary The Forgotten Kingdom
While William went on to continue his education at St. Andrews (where he met his bride), Harry entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He did a bunch of military things and quickly rose in the ranks.
THEN, because he’s a badass, he went to Afghanistan, even though he was seen as a high-value target. He did that for a while until some idiots in the media outed him and he had to come home. He also dated some chick named Chelsy Davy. Ok ok, they were very serious for about 5 years, splitting in 2009. She did, however, get an invite to the royal wedding in 2011.
He went back to Afghanistan, did more military stuff and learned to fly helicopters.
He did some training in Arizona which led to a much discussed trip to Vegas. I won’t show the goodies to you, but check out this article that details his vacation.
Harry was reeled back in and now carries out a lot of royal duties with his brother and sister-in-law. I feel like there’s a prime opportunity to write some fan fic about these two, because they secretly might be lovers.
Harry also had another high-profile relationship with Cressida Bonas, an aspiring actress. Unfortunately, it didn’t last. OR FORTUNATELY?
Harry officially left the military in 2015 but not before winning a bunch of medals.
Since leaving the army, he has spent most of the year traveling to places like New Zealand for a official royal visit and Africa for his continued work with charities, specifically animal conservation.
He also worked hard to create the Invictus Games, an Olympic-style sporting event for injured servicemen. The games were held in September, 2014 and are coming to the U.S. in May of 2016 in Orlando, Florida. Sooooo…who’s coming to Florida with me?
Harry has accomplished so much in his 31 years, and no doubt his mother would be so proud (tear). Here’s to you, Harry – happy birthday!
